On 16 June 2026, Europe’s emerging Foundation Models for Science (FM4Science) community met in Brussels for a joint workshop organised with the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative (HFMI). The occasion marked the launch of the first Horizon Europe research projects funded under the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE).

Five projects are developing scientific foundation models across materials, agriculture, environment, and climate. In materials science, GenMat (Politecnico di Torino) and SimuLingua (coordinated by Flowphys AS, Norway) presented their concepts alongside Evelyn, AgriScience, and EarthGenerator.

Discussions covered FAIR scientific data resources, computing infrastructure, collaboration between AI and domain experts, and shared resources across the FM4Science ecosystem. The joint kick-off is intended to connect teams from day one and shape lasting collaborations under RAISE.
